Hey Girlfriend
I am coming at you today with some harsh truths.
You may know by now that I am sooooo big on protecting your energy.
I’ve spoken about it a lot on my podcast because it is one of the most important lessons I have ever learnt.
Have you ever heard of the saying ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’?
Well, if you are constantly filling everyone else’s cup up and falling short of filling up your own, then you won’t have anything left to give.
Humans by nature will always try and help the people around them, but we need to help ourselves first before we can help anyone else.
That’s exactly why on an aeroplane you are instructed to take care of yourself before you help anyone else.
So GF, today I am coming to you with the how’s and why’s of protecting your energy.
Firstly, I want to remind you of something - you never need to feel guilty for protecting your energy.
Don’t feel guilty for cancelling plans, if it means protecting your energy.
Don’t feel guilty for saying no to an event, if it means protecting your energy.
Don’t feel guilty for limiting your time with someone, if it means protecting your energy.
Don’t feel guilty about staying in your room at home, if it means protecting your energy.
Don’t feel bad about leaving a job, if it means protecting your energy.
Don’t ever feel guilty about protecting your energy.
Because at the end of the day no one else is going to protect your energy for you, so make it your top priority.
So why do I find it so important to protect my energy?
Like I said, you can’t pour from an empty cup & you certainly can’t be there for others if you aren’t there for yourself first.
I used to be one of those people who were constantly pepping those up around me but it became draining and I realised that my energy was running on empty and I wasn’t able to give 100% to the things I needed to.
I’ll say it again: You can’t pour from an empty cup.
So, I made a commitment to myself to start protecting my energy. I am careful where I place it and who I exert it with, and I don’t feel guilty because protecting your energy should be your priority.
So now you know the why, let’s unpack the how…
I know protecting your energy can feel selfish or like you aren’t being there for the people in your life, but in the long run it’s better for everyone.
Some ways I protect my energy are:
- Saying ‘no’ to things
- Limiting my time with people who take all my energy without giving any back
- Being selective with how I spend my time, and who with
- Mute people on social media that don’t fill up my cup
- Stop ‘pepping’ people up (you know those people who constantly have something wrong with them, help them break this cycle)
How to stop feeling guilty about it...
I know these things can seem harsh, but you don’t need to apologise for any of them.
You are protecting your energy, just like the people who you are surrounded by should protect theirs.
Remind yourself that your energy is important and without it, you can’t give the people in your life what they need and deserve.
Remind yourself that it’s okay to say ‘no’ to things, people or situations that no longer serve you.
You need to take care of you first, then you can take care of the people around you.
Here is your reminder to give yourself unconditional permission to protect your energy and give yourself the love and support that you need.
Love always
G xx
